A man who hit his pregnant wife with a hammer has been arrested and is awaiting to appear in court on murder charges.
According to the Police the woman died at the hospital as a result of the injury on her head.
Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at Gizo Police Station arrested the suspect last week.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Western Province, Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says the de facto couple had an argument at home and the defendant used a hammer and hit the victim’s head.
PPC Lenialu says an initial medical report confirmed the skull was fractured and internal bleeding occurred.
The victim was rushed to Helena Goldie Hospital where she was further referred to Gizo Hospital for further medical attention.
“The defendant and his wife were living at a Village in Roviana Lagoon, Western Province.
“This is a sad incident as the deceased died with a five-month-old fetus in her womb,” he says
Mr. Lenialu says police are working closely with the relatives of the deceased for the autopsy to be conducted to form part of the investigation.
The suspect is remanded at Gizo Correctional Facility and will appear in court at a later date.
He expresses his condolences to the family and relatives for the loss of their loved one and he appeals to both parties to refrain from taking the laws into their own hands.
