Renal Colic, a severe pain that you will never forget!

China Medical team is currently in Solomon Islands working at the National Referral Hospital, Dr Shawn XIAO is one of the medical doctors with the China Medical Team and tells his experience working in the Solomon Islands.

I am Dr Shawn from China medical team. Today I will share something about renal colic, a severe pain you will never forget.

In the Solomon Islands, due to the weather being hot all year around, urinary diseases are common, like renal colic, a severe pain that happens suddenly, often caused by ureteral stones. When stones are moving in the kidney and into the ureter, they will irritate the ureter spasm causing severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting.

If your family members or friends have renal colic, you should immediately take them to the emergency department in near hospitals. After having a consultation, doctors will often give the treatment to relieve the spasm and the pain.

Then a series of examinations such as a urinary ultrasound scan or a CT scan will locate the stone and identify its shape. Luckily the stone is very small (<0.6 cm) and there is no hydronephrosis obviously, doctors will suggest that they just take some medication, drink more water, do more exercises, and have a review after 2 or 4 weeks. Otherwise, if the stone is too large to pass out or the hydronephrosis is severe, they will be admitted to prepare for urological surgery.

The best way to prevent renal colic is to drink enough water. If urine is dark yellow, brown, or even orange, you can be very dehydrated. Drinking more water will have more urine and the salts in the urine will be less likely to crystallize into stones.

Furthermore, urine can clean impurities, components of stones, out of the ureter and lessen the retention of stones in the urinary system. The last suggestion is that we should have a regular ultrasound scan of the kidney, ureter, and bladder once a year.

It will be helpful to find out and cure urinary diseases timely.

Lastly, I am a urological surgeon of the 2nd China Medical Team in Solomon Islands, specializing in the treatment of the kidney, adrenal gland, urethra, bladder, ureter, prostate, testicle, and penis disorders.

The urological specialists’ outpatient clinic of the NRH is open every Monday morning, and I will see patients there.
