China medical team saves elderly patient with heart attack

SOLOMON Island doctors at the emergency department of the National Referral Hospital have praised the work and quick response by the China Medical Team for saving another life with a heart attack on May 29, 2023.

A local doctor at the emergency department of the NRH says this is the second time that Chinese Doctor Si Xiaoyun has saved another life at the emergency department.

“We are very fortunate; our colleague from China saved the elderly patient at our request,” the local doctor said.

A temporary pacemaker implanted at the bedside of the Solomon Islands National Referral Hospital (NRH) successfully saved an elderly patient with a heart attack.

According to the China Medical Team, on the afternoon of May 29, Dr. Si Xiaoyun, a member of the China Medical Team, was informed by the emergency department of the NRH that a patient with an acute heart attack was in critical condition. They requested urgent assistance from the China Medical Team. Dr. Si Xiaoyun and his team member, Dr. Shawn, immediately set off for the hospital.

As soon as they arrived, Dr. Si quickly checked on the patient, an elderly male who had fainted twice already. Based on his symptoms, vital signs, and ECG results, the patient was diagnosed with myocardial infarction with a low heart rate and significant dizziness. After careful discussion with Dr Shawn and Dr Trina from the Emergency Department, Dr Si decided to perform a temporary pacemaker implantation at the bedside for the patient to relieve his discomfort.

After rapid disinfection and towel laying and positioning, successful penetration of the subclavian vein was followed by rapid pacemaker electrode implantation. The heart rate was elevated to 76 beats per minute, which significantly relieved the patient’s discomfort.
At the end of the treatment, on-site clinical teaching was given to the interns and attending physicians of the hospital in terms of body positioning markings for venipuncture, the direction of needle insertion, the key points of puncture, as well as ways to prevent possible complications. Dr. Si also introduced the characteristics of the different pacing modes of the pacemaker, the selection and setting of various pacing parameters, and the characteristics of the ECG with the pacing electrodes in different positions within the ventricle.

The temporary pacemaker implantation was led by Dr. Si with the cooperation of Dr. Shawn and Dr. Trina. Despite the lack of X-ray guidance, the implantation was carried out successfully, quickly, and accurately. Dr. Si was praised by the local doctors and patients for his excellent medical skills and selfless clinical teaching.
