China Medical Team Taught a Chinese Fitness Exercise to Solomon Islanders

ON May 28, Dr Gary Xu, a member of China Medical Team, carried out an ancient Chinese fitness exercise—Baduanjin demonstration to local people in AJ City Mall of Honiara. More than 40 spectators stood up one after another and practiced the exercise with great interest when Dr Gary was giving the explanation and display of it. The demonstration was warmly welcomed by the locals.

Baduanjin originated in ancient China and was invented by working people in the process of life and work. It is composed of eight (sounds “ba” in Chinese) parts of body movements with breathing regulation respectively, which is why it is named Baduanjin. Some people once believed that Baduanjin was a kind of Chinese Qigong or martial arts. Nowadays it is a popular fitness exercise among Chinese people.

Dr Gary thinks that the people of the Solomon Islands are good at singing and dancing, and they are talented in practising Baduanjin too. As an ancient fitness method, Baduanjin has a lot of benefits for physical and mental health. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, practising Baduanjin can not only reduce the risk of chronic diseases but also facilitate recovery from certain diseases.

In addition to Baduanjin, Acupuncture and moxibustion are very popular in the Solomon Islands at present. The 2nd China medical team in the Solomon Islands has 2 acupuncture and moxibustion experts in the National Referral Hospital. They receive daily outpatient visits close to 30. As the growing needs of the public, several medical technicians from the National Referral Hospital have joined them to learn how to practice acupuncture. China Medical Team welcome more medical technicians who can be a part of them to serve acupuncture for more people in the Solomon Islands.
