HONIARA City Mayor Eddie Siapu is urging immediate action to address the cleanliness issues in the city.

During the Solomon Islands’ 45th Independence anniversary, Mayor Siapu emphasized the need to preserve Honiara’s beauty and create a safe, clean environment for everyone.

He called upon residents and visitors to take responsibility for the city, reduce waste generation, and stop littering.

Mayor Siapu also highlighted the problem of drugs, alcohol, and home-brewed kwaso in the city, urging NGOs, policing agencies, and churches to intensify their efforts against substance abuse. While acknowledging the cultural significance of betel nut chewing, he stressed responsible consumption and disposal.

The Mayor pledged to impose stricter regulations, including fines, to address these issues once approved by the National Parliament.

Mayor Siapu called for collaboration among the public, government, businesses, development partners, NGOs, and churches to establish a crime-free and pristine environment in Honiara.

He expressed gratitude to donor partners and friends for their support and urged them to continue their involvement. By embracing collective responsibility, reducing waste, and preserving the city’s natural beauty, Honiara can become a cherished and proud city for future generations.
