Solomon Islands Forges Historic Ties with China, Defying Decades of Diplomatic Tradition

The establishment of diplomatic relations between the Solomon Islands and the People’s Republic of China represents a momentous decision for the Solomon Islands, coming more than 40 years after gaining independence and becoming a sovereign nation recognized by the United Nations. Prime Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare MP expressed this sentiment during his remarks on the matter.

Prime Minister Sogavare emphasized that the decision to terminate diplomatic ties with Taiwan and forge a new diplomatic relationship with China was a manifestation of the Solomon Islands’ commitment to its ‘sovereign responsibility’ as a responsible United Nations member. This commitment involves adhering to the foundational principles upon which the United Nations was established. He elaborated on one of these principles, which is the “respect for territorial integrity” – a fundamental principle of international law that underscores the importance of nation-states not promoting secessionist movements or border changes in other nations, nor resorting to force to impose such changes.

Prime Minister Sogavare firmly asserted that this was a sovereign decision made in accordance with United Nations Resolution 2758 of 1971, which officially recognized the existence of only One China in the world and affirmed Taiwan as a province of the People’s Republic of China. He underlined that this decision aligned the Solomon Islands with the correct side of history.

He went on to acknowledge that for 36 years following its independence in 1978, coincidentally, seven years after the United Nations’ decision to expel Taiwan and cease recognizing it as a sovereign nation, the Solomon Islands, through its diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (ROC), had knowingly violated the territorial integrity of the People’s Republic of China. As a United Nations member, this action was in direct conflict with the principles of responsible international conduct.

Recognizing this historical error, the Solomon Islands had to set aside its pride, take corrective action, and rectify this historical injustice, despite the disappointment it may have caused to some. Prime Minister Sogavare stated that the country was taken aback by the controversy that arose following its decision to recognize One China. Some members of the United Nations even questioned sovereign decisions, especially in the context of sustainable development, national security, and people-to-people relations.

Prime Minister Sogavare expressed his disappointment with individuals both within and outside the country who unfairly criticized the sovereign decision of the state. He reaffirmed that the Solomon Islands remains committed to its relationship with the People’s Republic of China and will not be deterred by any nations seeking to undermine this relationship through the spread of unfounded allegations, misinformation, or hostility.

Prime Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare delivered these remarks during the farewell ceremony for the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to the Solomon Islands, His Excellency Li Ming, held last week.
