COOK Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown, who serves as the Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, has announced ongoing discussions with Fiji Airways to streamline travel arrangements for Pacific members, particularly offering direct flights from Nadi to Rarotonga.

This is for the upcoming 52nd Pacific Island Forum Leaders Meeting that will be held in Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

During a recent press conference, Hon. Brown expressed satisfaction with the progress of these discussions.

“Our discussions have been progressing very well, and in the next couple of days, we will release a statement confirming the arrangements we have in place. We are acutely aware that after the disruptions caused by COVID-19, some of our air links are still being reestablished, and the cost of travel remains prohibitively high for many in the Pacific.” Mr Brown said.

Prime Minister Brown highlighted the Forum’s commitment to facilitating easier access for Pacific delegations to reach Rarotonga. One key proposal under consideration is the establishment of a direct flight route from Nadi to Rarotonga, enabling Pacific countries with access to Nadi to take advantage of this efficient travel option.

He said Pacific Islands Forum is expected to issue a formal statement regarding these travel arrangements in the coming week, offering greater clarity on the measures to streamline travel for member nations attending the upcoming meeting in the Cook Islands.
