Solomon Islands Electoral Commission Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Commissioner Jasper Highwood Anisi
THE Solomon Islands Electoral Office (SIEO) Media and Communications team is soon to roll out its voters’ awareness program in preparation for the ‘Synchronized Elections’ in April this year 2024.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and Commissioner Jasper Highwood Anisi acknowledged that the task of educating our people on the important subject of elections is an enormous challenge.
Mr Anisi stated each electoral event, the Office of the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission invests considerable resources in voter awareness and public outreach.
“Through radio programs, face-to-face awareness talks, school visits, and our work with the media, SIEC is constantly engaged in educating the public about their rights and responsibilities as voters throughout the electoral cycle,” he added.
He further stated that SIEO Officers cannot complete this enormous task alone. “In our country of more than 900 different islands, with our many different languages and traditions, and with significant challenges in communications and transportation, voters’ education must become everyone’s business.”
Mr Anisi urged, all family influencers, breadwinners and anyone who is in access to any electoral information to take on the responsibly of educating and relaying correct information to our family members.
The country will hold its joint election in April this year as was enabled by the recent changes in the Electoral legal framework.
The final 2 pieces of legislation allowing implementation of this joint election were passed by the parliament towards the end of the year 2023.
More public awareness of the Joint elections will be coming through our radio programs social media campaigns and face-to-face awareness programs.
The Solomon Islands Electoral Office will continue to work together with NGOs, Community leaders, Church Leaders, Civil Society Groups, and the public to prepare our voters for the Joint Election in April.
CEO Mr. Anisi also acknowledges the Solomon Islands Government (SIG), Australian Government, New Zealand Government, European Union and UNDP and other donor partners who have helped to fund the preparation for the upcoming 2024 ‘Joint Election’.
