THE Honiara City Council (HCC) has acknowledged the government and the people of Australia for a significant boost in its public infrastructure with a 7 million project aiming at enhancing bus shelters across the city.

This initiative was funded by the Australian Government, in collaboration with the Solomon Islands Infrastructure Partnership (SIIP) which out of the five bus shelters, the one at King George VI National Secondary School has been completed.

HCC Mayor, Eddie Kasute’e Siapu highlighted that Honiara City Council is pleased to receive the five modern bus shelters funded by the government and the people of Australia.

“This construction of five bus shelters cost the government and people of Australia 7 million dollars,” the mayor explained.

He emphasized that the construction of the bus shelters was initiated by the Honiara City Council and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) ideally to cater to safe and convenient waiting spaces for the thousands of people depending on public bus services each day.

“These bus shelters will eventually solve the problem experienced by the traveling public of Honiara city, while they have to brave the scorching sun or rain while waiting to catch public buses. This will be a thing of the past for people using this bus stand here at King George VI School and soon other 4 bus shelters along the main highway,” he said.

He expressed his gratitude for the generous support emphasizing the significant impact this project will have on the city’s transportation system.

“We are immensely grateful to the Australian Government and SIIP for their continued support. These new bus shelters will not only provide much-needed comfort and safety for our commuters but will also contribute to the overall modernization of our city’s infrastructure,” said Mayor Siapu.
