The much-talked-about Malaita Road Network Project will soon commence, as signified by the signing of the Auki Road project between the Solomon Islands Government and the Peopleโs Republic of China (PRC).
At the brief signing ceremony, the Solomon Islands Government was represented by the Minister of Infrastructure Development (MID), Honourable Manasseh Maelanga, while His Excellency Cai Weiming represented the Peopleโs Republic of China (PRC). The signing took place in the Cabinet Room at the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet on Thursday 10th October 2024.
The signing was witnessed by the Prime Minister Honourable Jeremiah Manele MP and the Premier of Malaita Province, Honourable Elijah Asilaua.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Manele underscored that the signing marks the official kick-off of a project that will change peoplesโ lives for generations to come. He emphasised, the people of Malaita Province deserve better road infrastructure.
โTo the people of Malaita, may this road be a lasting source of pride and a reminder that, through partnership, we have the power to transform our communitiesโ.
Prime Minister Manele adds, the Auki Road project reflects our shared belief that every citizen deserves safe, reliable infrastructure that supports their aspirations and well-being.
He also highlighted that the project is the culmination of a strong partnership between the national government and the Peopleโs Republic of China (PRC), adding that it is also a testament to cooperation and commitment.
โThis road, which will benefit generations to come, stands as a symbol of what we can accomplish when we work hand in hand toward a shared vision for progress.โ
PM Manele stated that the project is one of the key outcomes of his recent state visit to the PRC.
This collaboration is a testament to the power of unity and mutual respect. โIt is the strength we find in each otherโs support, as both the National Government and the Provincial Government have brought their resources, expertise, and commitment together for the benefit of the people of Malaitaโ.
This partnership sets a model for cooperation that will inspire future projects and greater development in the country, the Prime Minister continued.

The Prime Minister thanked PRC Ambassador His Excellency Cai Weiming for committing his personal time during his holiday in Beijing to ensure that the project is implemented.
In his brief remarks, H.E Cai Weiming expressed that the signing is another testament of Chinaโs support to Solomon Islands infrastructure development, further cementing the SI- PRC friendship.
He stressed, Infrastructure connectivity is an important component of the relationship.
Ambassador Cai Weiming assures, China will continue to provide assistance to Solomon Islands in infrastructure, rural development, trade, Health care and education.
The Malaita Provincial Premier Hon. Elijah Asilaua said, the signing fortifies the SI-PRC relations. โOn behalf of my provincial government and people of Malaita, I convey our heartfelt gratitude for the gift of the Auki road infrastructure.โ

The Malaita Road Network Project began with the signing of various necessary documents toward the end of last year. It will be the major project for Malaita Province following the Kiluโufi Hospital maintenance work.
Malaita Province is the most populated province, and it has a lot of potential to develop further and contribute to nation-building.
