56-year-old businessman charged for alleged rape

A 56-year-old businessman was arrested on 6 November 2024 by Taro police for an alleged rape of a16-year-old girl at a village in North West Choiseul recently.

Police Commissioner Mr. Mostyn Mangau said it was alleged that the suspect raped the victim on different occasions in the month of August 2024.

Commissioner Mangau said during those rape incidents, the victim shouted and struggled to free herself but failed as the suspect overpowered her.

Mr. Mangau said the victim reported the matter to a family member, and community leaders reported the matter to the police.

Mangau confirmed that the suspect has been questioned and was later charged with three counts of rape, contrary to Section 138 of the penal code.

The police chief said the suspect is currently remanded at the Gizo correctional centre, awaiting further court proceedings at a later date while the investigation into the matter is continuing.
