Discover the Hidden Gem of Kohove River: A Natural Spa in the Wilderness

By Mere Tuqiri

In the heart of the wilderness, the serene Kohove River offers an enchanting escape, where chilly waters foam around you, creating a natural spa experience. This picturesque river, nestled west of Honiara, boasts numerous pool pockets bordered by towering rock walls and lush primary vegetation.

While Kohove may initially appear to be a long, gurgling stream, it reveals its true nature during heavy rains, transforming into a robust river. The crystal-clear waters meander over fallen boulders and tree trunks, sculpted by nature’s forces, forming captivating miniature waterfalls and inviting pools that range from shallow to seemingly bottomless.

My adventure began at Lumatapopoho village, accompanied by local guides Joachim Belei and Francine Jaki. The Kohove River trek is intricately linked to the Vera Tapopoho Cultural Village and the breathtaking Barasai Waterfall. Eager to showcase the beauty of Barasai, Joachim led us through the challenging yet rewarding terrain of the Kohove River.

After completing the trek, I can confidently recommend Kohove as a destination in its own right. The river system, with its myriad delights, is well worth the journey. While the trek to Barasai is enticing, the mesmerizing beauty of the river itself is a captivating experience.

During my visit, the cultural village was still developing, but there are hopes for more authentic cultural activities in the future, including the tatalonga ceremony (a traditional welcome), fire-making demonstrations, and food preparation showcases.

Navigating the river’s boulders can be a test of patience, but with careful footing, obstacles can be overcome. At times, we ventured up the slopes to progress more smoothly. For our return, we opted for a different route, ascending the steep terrain of the open-air Tahile Trek. This ascent rewarded us with a stunning 360-degree view of the ocean, sprawling grasslands, distant houses, and Honiara’s water catchment site, Kongulai. The only sounds were the squelching of wet shoes and light conversation, creating a tranquil atmosphere.

If you choose to take the Tahile route back to the village, be sure to pack bug repellent. However, it’s essential to note that the Tahile path should not be your entry point to Kohove, as you would miss the river’s enchanting beauty. Instead, start your trek from the village and let Kohove’s charm captivate you.

While there are various ways to access Kohove River and Barasai Waterfall, my journey was facilitated by Sightsee Solomon Tours, who serve as a vital link between visitors and the local community. They provide convenient pick-up and drop-off services from local hotels and can offer cost information for your adventure.

Kohove River is truly a hidden gem—don’t miss the chance to experience its natural wonders!
