The Solomon Islands boasts the highest-ranked passport among Pacific Island nations, sharing the 37th position globally, according to the Henley Passport Index. This index, produced by a consulting firm known as “the global leader in residence and citizenship by investment,” ranks passports based on global travel freedoms, utilizing data from the International Air Transport Association.
The index evaluates 199 passports and 227 travel destinations. The Solomon Islands passport permits entry to 134 countries, while Samoa and Tonga provide access to 131 destinations, and the Marshall Islands allows entry to 129. Tuvalu ranks 41st with access to 128 countries, and Kiribati, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau each have visa-free access to 124 countries.
Further down the ranking, Vanuatu has access to 92 countries, Fiji to 90, Nauru to 89, and Papua New Guinea to 87. Leading the list is Singapore, with access to 195 countries, followed by Japan with 193, and six countriesโFinland, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Spainโtied at 192. New Zealand ranks 5th with access to 190 countries, and Australia is 6th with 189. This marks New Zealand’s highest ranking since 2017; it reached 4th place in 2015 but fell to 8th in 2018 and 2019.
At the bottom of the list are countries like Yemen, Iran, and Syria, with Afghanistan ranking last at 106th place, allowing visa-free access to only 26 countries. Notably, Australia has the world’s most expensive passport, with a new adult passport priced at AUD$412 (about US$255.30), followed by Mexico (US$222.82), the USA (US$162.36), and New Zealand (US$120.37).
Henley and Partners employ a scoring system for the index. A passport earns a score of 1 for each destination that does not require a visa. The same score is given if passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authority (ETA) upon entering a country. The total score for each passport reflects the number of destinations where no visa is needed. Henley manages the new Nauru climate investment passport program and Solomon Islands is in the final stages of launching it’s passport program with final approval expected after the next session of Parliament meets in March 2025.
