SAPT Editor Jake Sanders with Solomon Islands Immigration Minister, Hon. Harry Kuma
In 2019, the Solomon Islands Government established diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China, leading to the signing of a Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement on November 7, 2024. Honorable Harry Kuma, Minister for Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration, endorsed this agreement, allowing ordinary passport holders from the PRC to enter the Solomon Islands for up to 30 days without a visa.
The arrangement was officially gazetted on November 20, 2024, and became effective on January 27, 2025, when the Minister declared the PRC a concessional country under the Immigration Act 2012. On the same day, a mutual visa exemption policy was signed, outlining procedures to secure borders and facilitate safe migration.
The policy includes guidelines for Solomon Islands passport holders to receive reciprocal visa exemptions upon arrival. Officials, including Permanent Secretary Mr. Riley Mesepitu and Acting Director of Immigration Mr. Christopher Akosawa, acknowledged China’s role in finalizing this agreement, emphasizing its reciprocal benefits for both nations in trade, culture, and bilateral relations.
The Immigration Department will ensure border security while promoting lawful migration, in line with the agreement’s protocols.
