Gizo police rescues three adults at sea in Western Province

GIZO police have rescued three adults who were stranded at sea between Choiseul, Gizo, and Vela La Vela after their engine had a mechanical failure on 30 January 2025.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) National Capital and Crime Prevention (NCCP) Mr. Simpson Pogeava said three adults (a couple and their nephew) left their village at South Choiseul at 6 am, starting their journey to Gizo.

“After two hours of travelling, the engine had a mechanical failure,” said ACP Pogeava.

“The three individuals called Gizo police after they encountered mechanical failure, and police attended to the incident and rescued them to Vela La Vela Island,” he said.

AC Pogeava appeals to sea travellers to make sure your engine is seaworthy, and please check weather updates before starting to travel.

Ensure to always have extra fuel with you when travelling.
