GIZO, WESTERN PROVINCE โ The Solomon Islands Government has officially opened the newly refurbished Gizo Police Station, Western Provincial Police Headquarters, and a dedicated small boats facility, in a move hailed as a major advancement for law enforcement and community safety in the Western Province.
The upgraded infrastructure, delivered under the Solomon IslandsโAustralia Defence Cooperation Program, was formally inaugurated on Tuesday by the Minister for Police, National Security and Correctional Services, Hon. Jimson Tanangada, MP. The project was supported by the Australian Government and implemented through the Australian Defence Force (ADF), underscoring the enduring partnership between the two nations.
The opening ceremony attracted senior dignitaries, including Admiral David Johnston, Chief of the Australian Defence Force, the Australian High Commissioner, and top officials from both governments.
In his keynote address, Minister Tanangada emphasised the strategic significance of Gizo and the Western Province to national security, citing its proximity to the ShortlandsโBougainville international border, Noro port, Munda Airport, and key national industries.
โGizo is more than a provincial capital โ it is a strategic location for the country. The Western Province plays a critical role in our national security landscape,โ Tanangada said.
The refurbished facilities, which include advanced solar lighting for improved community safety, are expected to significantly strengthen the Royal Solomon Islands Police Forceโs (RSIPF) ability to address security challenges and better serve the regionโs growing population.
Minister Tanangada urged police officers to take ownership of the new infrastructure, stating, โInfrastructure alone does not keep people safe โ it is the leadership, commitment, and integrity of our officers that makes the difference.โ
He also called on provincial leaders and local communities to work alongside police to maintain law and order, highlighting the importance of community partnership in ensuring public safety.
On behalf of the Solomon Islands Government, Minister Tanangada expressed gratitude to Australia, describing the upgraded facilities as โa symbol of what we can achieve together through partnership and shared vision.โ
The Gizo small boats facility is one of six established nationwide under the Solomon IslandsโAustralia security partnership, aimed at bolstering maritime policing in remote and coastal areas.
The ceremony concluded with a tour of the new infrastructure and a reaffirmation of both countriesโ commitment to peace, safety, and development across the Solomon Islands.
