PRIME Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare MP has assured the Republic of Korea of the Solomon Islands support towards its candidature for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for the 2024–2025 term.
Prime Minister Sogavare personally assured His Excellency Yoon Suk Yeol, President of the Republic of Korea, in a bilateral meeting.
“Multilaterally, rest assured of our support for the Republic of Korea’s candidature for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council; we hope this could be reciprocated in 2032 for the Solomon Islands UN Security Council candidature,” said the Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Sogavare also congratulated the President of Korea.
for the excellent arrangements his government has put in place for the historic summit.
“I look forward to the engagement and stand ready to work with you on all issues of mutual concern.”
PM Sogavare said Solomon Islands has one of the highest electricity costs in the world; however, Korean company K-Water is Solomon Islands major partner on the Tina hydro project. The country is hopeful that once Tina Hydro is operational, electricity costs will reduce and more investors will be attracted to do business in the country.
Prime Minister Sogavare adds, “I would encourage more of such investment from Korea, which could invest and connect more of our provinces to the grid.”
Prime Minister Sogavare also acknowledged the Korean Government’s support for the Solomon Islands National University, especially the School of Fisheries construction.
Meanwhile, the President of the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Yoon Suk Yeol, informed Prime Minister Sogavare that it’s been thirteen years since the last Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands visited South Korea. President Yoon Suk Yeol also acknowledged Solomon Islands for being such a gracious host for Korean companies, including Eagon, Hyundai Kosol Company Ltd., and K-Water Company.
President Yoon Suk Yeol also conveyed his best wishes for the Solomon Islands’ successful hosting of the 2023 Pacific Games in November this year and pledged his support for the games.
Prime Minister Sogavare said Solomon Islands is sad that the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), who built SINU’s Fisheries School, left the country in 2021 during the pandemic. “We hope in time KOICA will return to Solomon Islands.
Solomon Islands looks forward to Korea’s support for the 2023 Pacific Games and thanks Korea for its kind gesture.
