THE Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) effectively executed a live scenario exercise in Honiara on October 6, 2023, as part of their preparations for the upcoming Pacific Games 2023 (PG23).
This exercise is a vital component of the RSIPF’s readiness and response strategy for potential incidents during the games. The session, which began at 10 am and concluded around 2 pm, involved the enactment of three distinct scenarios in different locations. By conducting this live exercise in the public domain, the RSIPF aimed to provide a realistic portrayal of situations that might arise during PG23.
Notably, this marked the first occasion where the RSIPF conducted real-time exercises in a public setting. Despite some concerns raised during the debrief session, these insights proved invaluable for the RSIPF to refine current practices and address potential issues.
In one scenario, situated at Burns Creek main road, the RSIPF tested the capabilities of General Duties (GDs), Traffic, Close Personal Protection, Fire, and Ambulance teams in resolving a simulated traffic incident.
At the Lawson Tama incident, GDs, Central Response Unit, Emergency Response Group (ERG), and Police Response Team gauged their response levels in handling tense situations. Investigators were also involved in conducting their investigations during this scenario.
The maritime incident focused on assessing the RSIPF’s ability to facilitate victims’ families and friends in a safe and secure environment at the Pt Cruz wharf.
RSIPF Commissioner Mr. Mostyn Mangau emphasized that the scenario exercise provided valuable lessons. He anticipates further improvements through smaller-scale exercises scheduled during the GOC test events this month.
Commissioner Mangau urged the public to collaborate with the police as the event draws near, expressing pride in hosting PG23 and encouraging everyone to contribute to making it a memorable occasion for the country and the region.
The scenario exercise kicked off with a briefing and concluded with a debriefing session, emphasizing the importance of learning and refining strategies in preparation for the Pacific Games 2023.
