POLICE have apprehended a 20-year-old male suspect in connection to the tragic incident involving a foreign national in Honiara on December 3, 2023.
Police Media Unit said the victim, is a resident of Papua New Guinea, was of Cook Islands and Samoa descent and was in the country to visit his brother, who led the Cook Islands team for the 17th Pacific Games.
Police said National Traffic Department (NTD) of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) has verified that the deceased was in the country to reunite with his brother and was not part of the official team.
According to Director NTD, Superintendent William Foufaka, the fatal accident occurred as the suspect, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was driving eastbound at a high speed.
Director Foufaka explained that the vehicle, while approaching Saru beach, veered off the road and collided with the rail on the low lane, causing it to rebound onto the high lane.
The vehicle maintained its high speed and collided with the middle island at St. Nicholas Junction. Following this impact, the vehicle jumped and hit the rail on the low lane once again, resulting in a twist that led to the tragic collision with the deceased.
Superintendent Foufaka emphasized that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and urged individuals present at the scene to come forward with any relevant information to assist the police. On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, as well as the ranks and file of the RSIPF, Superintendent Foufaka extended condolences to the grieving family during this challenging time.
He underscored the police force’s continuous efforts in promoting road safety, expressing concern about some drivers’ disregard for traffic rules. Superintendent Foufaka reminded the public, “If you drink, don’t drive.”
