SICCI’s BCIWG pushes for National Building Code Bill

Building and Construction Working Group Committee

BUILDING and Construction Working Group which forms part of Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) is pushing for the approval of the National Building Code Bill.

This was highlighted during their first committee meeting for 2024 in Honiara this month.

Aim and objectives of the proposed National Building Code Bill is to standardize building designs and construction in the country.

The proposed bill also looking at creating a level playing field for all local building and construction businesses to operate.

The bill awaits the reconvening of parliament, currently dissolved ahead of the upcoming elections.

Another agenda that was brought before the committee is the proposed plan to establish an Institute of Engineers and Architects.

Members agreed that the committee will revisit the position paper compiled for the establishment of the institution.

Committee members will review the position paper for the last time and put forward for SICCI Board to endorse.

Further consultations will be facilitated with government ministries and relevant stakeholders for the implementation of the position paper.

Chairlady of the working group, Ms Namoi acknowledges committee members who attended the meeting.

She describes the meeting as successful, informative and has set a clear path going forward.

SICCI’s Advocacy Officer, Mr. Elvis Bwa’a who manages all the working groups says his department will continue to support Building and Construction Working Group with its ambitions for this year 2024. He acknowledges committee members for their inputs towards Building and Construction Working Group’s key priorities.
