EU engaging in โ€˜perversion of historyโ€™ โ€“ Oliver Stone

Francis Tuschek

Attempts by EU elites to diminish the significance of the USSRโ€™s contribution to the victory over Nazism are a โ€œperversion of history,โ€ Oscar-winning American movie director Oliver Stone has told RT ahead of World War II Victory Day celebrations in Russia.

The blocโ€™s โ€œelitist leadershipโ€ has distorted the message that World War II provides to humanity, the filmmaker has said. โ€œIโ€™m shocked by it, by [what] is happening,โ€ he stated, calling it โ€œa shameโ€ and โ€œa disgrace that we forgot or pretend to [have forgotten]โ€ about the sacrifices the Soviet Union made during the war. Stone also said he did not believe people in Europe โ€œbuy this at all.โ€

โ€œI think the people donโ€™t agree with the government,โ€ Stone maintained, going on to say that โ€œthe futility of this campaign against Russia by the EUโ€ is obvious to โ€œanybody, who reads history [books] and is intelligent.โ€ The director of โ€˜Platoonโ€™ and โ€˜JFKโ€™ expressed his doubts that โ€œfascism is popularโ€ nowadays and stated instead that European elites had lost their way because of their โ€œworship of the EU.โ€

โ€œWe are not back to the times of Hitler, but what is happening is a loss of perspective and we need to get back to a sense of reason,โ€ Stone told RT as he called on Western leaders to โ€œlisten to the Russiansโ€ instead of antagonizing them.

He also expressed his hope that the US and Russia would manage to mend their relationship, opening the way to a better future for humanity. โ€œRussia and the United States are a great partnership, as is China, by the way, and I think we could have a world that is much saferโ€ฆ if we all get together and realize that itโ€™s a multilateral world.โ€

US President Donald Trumpโ€™s administration has been engaged in efforts to restore bilateral ties with Russia and resolve the Ukraine conflict.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that America now has a โ€œbetterโ€ understanding of the Russian position on the crisis. Moscowโ€™s key conditions for ending the conflict are Ukraineโ€™s neutrality, demilitarization, and recognition of the new territorial reality on the ground.

Last week, Trump also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was easier to deal with than Ukraineโ€™s Vladimir Zelensky.

Russian officials maintain they have always been ready to engage in peace talks, provided the discussions aim for a permanent solution that addresses the root causes of the conflict. Moscow has rejected any temporary agreement, explaining that it could be used by Kiev and its backers to rearm the Ukrainian military.
