THE Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavare, has expressed opposition to the LGBTIQA+ issue in Solomon Islands.

He made the statement at the country’s 45th independence anniversary on July 7, 2023, in Honiara.

He emphasized that Solomon Islands has its own values and will not accept the imposition of outside values, and he is particularly concerned about how the LGBTIQA+ issue will shape foreign policies and potentially affect the Solomon Islands.

“I am increasingly uneasy about this LBGQT+ issue that has gained prominence in other parts of the world. What happens there is not a concern for us. My concern, though, is how LBGQT+ people will shape their foreign policy and how that will affect us.

“I do not want the issue of LBGQT+ to be weaponized against us and used as a condition for accessing aid. I am watching and following the debate there very closely, and I am conscious of how the contents of television and movies have captured this and are infiltrating our society”, Sogavare says.

The Prime Minister believes that the people of the Solomon Islands have their Christian faith, cultural diversity, heritage, and traditions, which define their individual and collective identities as a nation. He believes that their common heritage and faith in their Creator hold them together culturally and spiritually.

The acronym LGBTIQ+ is an inclusive term that represents a diverse range of sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. Each letter in the acronym stands for a different aspect of this diversity.
