THE Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, Jeremiah Manele, and Australian Prime Minister have announced a comprehensive package of support to bolster the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF). This initiative, stemming from discussions initiated in June 2024, underscores Australia’s position as Solomon Islands’ preferred security partner.
The announcement reflects Solomon Islands’ commitment to developing a sustainable and independent security infrastructure, reducing long-term reliance on external assistance. This tailored support package aligns with Solomon Islands’ priorities and encompasses funding, training, and infrastructure development, including the establishment of a new sovereign Police Training Centre in Honiara.
This partnership is designed not only to strengthen the RSIPF but also to unlock economic opportunities and foster prosperity for Solomon Islanders. By investing in the RSIPF’s growth and capabilities, the collaboration aims to lay a new foundation for enduring cooperation between the two nations.
Prime Minister Manele and his Australian counterpart emphasized the familial bond between Solomon Islands and Australia, highlighting shared geography, history, and aspirations. The longstanding partnership has supported Solomon Islands’ security, economic growth, and development objectives. Today’s announcement reaffirms this shared vision, rooted in mutual trust, respect, and open dialogue.
This latest commitment builds upon over four decades of collaboration between Solomon Islands and Australia in areas such as policing, disaster relief, defense, border security, and cyber security. Notable milestones include the Solomons International Assistance Force (SIAF, 2021-2024) and the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI, 2003-2017).
As outlined in Solomon Islands’ three-tier security framework, agreed upon during the June 2024 discussions, this initiative prioritizes the strengthening of the RSIPF, followed by support from Melanesian countries and other Pacific Islands Forum members.
The enhanced partnership not only aims to fortify Solomon Islands’ domestic security but also aspires to contribute to regional stability. Both nations look forward to implementing this transformative collaboration, which stands as a testament to their shared commitment to a peaceful and prosperous Pacific region.
This announcement heralds a new chapter in the Australia-Solomon Islands partnership, reinforcing their collective resolve to work together for a secure and thriving future.
