Tonga has officially received its National Sports Complex in Nuku’alofa, a facility funded by China at a cost exceeding $25 million. The complex features an indoor stadium for Tonga High School, an international-standard rugby field, netball and tennis courts, as well as an aquatics center.

The ceremonial handover occurred last Wednesday, with Prime Minister Dr. ‘Aisake Valu Eke and China’s Ambassador to Tonga Liu Weimin in attendance. The indoor stadium was previously inaugurated by Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, serving as the main venue for the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum held last August.

Prime Minister Eke emphasized that the National Sports Complex not only offers high-quality sports facilities to the public but also aims to motivate Tongan athletes to strive for gold at the upcoming 2031 Pacific Games.

According to the Tongan Prime Minister’s Office, the transfer of the complex marks a significant milestone in the relationship between Tonga and China. The complex is expected to serve not just as a sports venue but also as a hub for large-scale gatherings, community events, and cultural activities, underscoring the strong friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
