PM Manele urges Pacific Unity, action at 54th PIFLM

SOLOMON Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele emphasized during the opening of the week-long 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Honiara that success lies not only in the destination but also in the journey itself.

Reflecting on the past, he compared the regionalism journey to the wansolwara voyage by Tepuke and Uto ni Yalo across the seas from Temotu to Guadalcanal—navigating storms and waves to reach their destination. Similarly, success in regionalism is found in our collective journey toward achieving our shared vision.

He stated that the theme of this year’s Forum, “Iumi Tugeda: Act Now for an Integrated Blue Pacific Continent,” reflects who we are and calls us to where we must go. It highlights our shared identity, interconnectedness, and responsibility to create a sustainable future for our people.

“Iumi Tugeda” embodies the spirit of Pacific solidarity, rooted in kinship, mutual respect, and the Pacific Way. In the Solomon Islands, it is a principle that underpins kastom and the wantok system—traditions that honor and elevate the value of kinship. The phrase “Act Now” reminds us that the challenges we face require immediate and united responses.

Prime Minister Manele explained that “An Integrated Blue Pacific Continent” reaffirms our shared vision and commitment to working together. It envisions a region connected not only by geography but also by purpose, values, and vision.

Addressing his fellow leaders, he expressed hope that the week would be used to tok stori—to deepen understanding of each other’s perspectives and find ways to address emerging challenges and opportunities as a Blue Pacific Continent. He hopes that upon leaving at the end of the week, leaders will be reassured that the winds are behind their sails and there is a clear path forward over the next 12 months to deepen regionalism.

“This is our time. This is our opportunity,” he declared. “Let us use this time to be clear about the expectations and decisions before us this week—on political leadership and unity, the regional system, deepened regionalism, and partnerships.”

He emphasized the importance of continuing to invest in regional organizations so they grow stronger and respond effectively to their members’ needs. He looks forward to discussing opportunities to strengthen intergovernmental organizations that uphold the spirit and purpose of international law.

The true highlight of the week, he said, will be the culmination and endorsement of two key regional initiatives that reaffirm the region’s global leadership:

The signing of the Agreement to Establish the Pacific Resilience Facility

The endorsement and commemoration of the Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace Declaration

Together, these represent a strong political recommitment to resilience and peace across the Blue Pacific Continent.

Prime Minister Manele also reaffirmed the value of partners and partnerships, acknowledging that the success of this week’s arrangements was only possible due to their support. He sincerely thanked partners for their understanding regarding the position taken in relation to this 54th Pacific Islands Forum convening and looks forward to inviting them to engage again at the next opportunity.
