Solomon Islands Pledges Peace for Progress at UN: A Call for Unity and Diplomacy

PRIME Minister Manasseh Sogavare of the Solomon Islands emphasized the inseparable link between sustainable developments and peace, highlighting that one cannot be achieved without the other.

At the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, last week he called attention to the ongoing global conflicts and wars, which have proven to be significant barriers to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) over the past seven years.

The Solomon Islands renews its fervent appeal for the cessation of all conflicts, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Sogavare stressed the urgent need to restore faith in the UN Charter and prioritize diplomatic solutions as the primary means to resolve conflicts.

He lamented that wars have only exacerbated vulnerabilities, eroded trust, and undermined global solidarity. According to him, it is imperative that we shift our focus from swords to ploughshares, sowing the seeds of peace to reap the fruits of progress, prosperity, and sustainability.

Sogavare also reiterated his call for a more inclusive, democratic, equitable, transparent, and accountable UN Security Council that reflects the realities of today’s world. This vision includes advocating for a dedicated seat for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Solomon Islands expressed its interest in serving on the Security Council nine years ago, with the intention of contributing during the period 2031–2032. The country continues to seek international support for its candidature and extends gratitude to those who have already shown their support.

Therefore he reiterated that Solomon Islands reaffirm its unwavering commitment to the principles of multilateralism and the spirit and purpose of the UN Charter.

Prime Minister Sogavare’s message underscores the vital importance of peace and cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals on a global scale, as the world unites in a call for unity and diplomacy at the United Nations.
