Police Information Session with Private Sector. Organized by SICCI
THE Royal Solomon Islands Police Force [RSIPF] says preparations to ensure safe election has been finalized and officers are now mobilizing to respective centers to provide security leading up to the polling day.
This was confirmed by Deputy Police Commissioner, DC Juanita Matanga during an information session organized by Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry [SICCI] early this week.
She said Police preparation for the upcoming National General Election has improved compared to 2019 National General Election plans.
DC Matanga said Police Intelligent Unit has worked extra hard over the past weeks and have identified what police refers to as “hot spot” that need extra efforts from the police.
She said police officers will be deployed to the provinces to support the rolling out of the National General Election.
“Police deployment to the provinces has already begun and provinces will expect high visibility of police officers before, during and after the election,” DC Matanga said.
She said para-military contingents from Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Australia will replenish RSIPF team operating within Honiara City.
DC Matanga adds that Australia and New Zealand Military will support RSIPF with logistics both on land, sea and air.
As part of Security, DC. Matanga said a liquor ban will be enforced beginning 16th of April to 26 of April – meaning all liquor outlets [except hotels, private clubs and restaurants] will not allowed to sell any forms of liquor to the general public.
“The liquor ban is to avoid people from getting drunk and disturb the election process. I know this is not good for business but we look at the positive side of the ban, which is to ensure safe election for everyone,” she said.
DC Matanga also explained that there will be a public holiday on 17th April to provide an opportunity for eligible voters to cast their votes.
